What is the CIPLE exam? Format, timing and sections
Last updated 2026-08-16
CIPLE — Certificado Inicial de Português Língua Estrangeira — is the entry-level certificate in the Portuguese examination system, set at A2 on the Common European Framework of Reference. It is awarded by CAPLE, the evaluation and certification centre at the Universidade de Lisboa.
The three components
CIPLE is not one sitting. It is three separately timed components, and the minutes do not transfer between them: running long on the reading paper does not borrow time from the listening one.
| Component | Duration | Weight |
|---|---|---|
| Compreensão da Leitura e Produção e Interação Escritas Reading comprehension and written production |
1h15 | 45% |
| Compreensão do Oral Listening comprehension |
30 min | 30% |
| Produção e Interação Orais Speaking |
15 min | 25% |
What each component asks of you
Reading and writing (45%). The longest component and the one carrying the most weight. Expect short authentic texts — notices, small ads, personal messages — with matching and multiple-choice questions, followed by writing tasks such as a short message or a form. The reading is recognisably everyday Portuguese: a rental advert, a note between friends.
Listening (30%). Recorded material in European Portuguese, with questions about what was said. The accent matters here: CIPLE is a Portugal exam, and Brazilian pronunciation is a different listening task.
Speaking (25%). The shortest component. An interaction rather than a monologue — you answer, describe, and take part in a short exchange.
What counts as a pass
55% overall is a pass, reported as Suficiente. Above that, 70–84% is Bom and 85–100% is Muito Bom.
One thing worth knowing: CAPLE does not publish a minimum score per individual component on its own page for this exam. Several third-party sites state one — and they disagree with each other, quoting 45% in some places and 50% in others. Because there is no primary source for it, this page does not repeat any of those numbers. If a per-component minimum matters to your plans, ask CAPLE directly rather than trusting a search result.
Practising the format
Knowing the shape of an exam and having sat one are different things. WLE recreates each component as its own timed paper, on the real clock, one question at a time — so the first time you meet the format is not on the day it counts. Sit a free CIPLE mock exam.
