DELE A2 and CCSE: the two exams for Spanish nationality

Applying for Spanish nationality by residence usually means passing two separate exams, not one. They test different things, they are booked separately, and people routinely discover the second one late.

The two exams

Both are administered by the Instituto Cervantes, and both are booked through its examination site. That they share an administrator is the reason they are so often confused for one exam.
What DELE A2 actually asks
A2 is an early level — the "basic user" band. It covers everyday exchanges: reading a notice or a short message, writing a simple text about yourself or your routine, following short conversations, and answering questions about familiar topics. It is not fluency, and the exam is not written as though it were.
DELE is a ladder rather than a single exam: it runs from A1 to C2, and A2 is simply the rung the nationality process points at. A higher DELE certificate demonstrates a higher level, but passing A2 is what the requirement asks for.
Two things people get caught by
The CCSE is not a Spanish test, and passing DELE does not cover it. It asks about the constitution, the institutions of the state, geography and culture. Preparing your Spanish does nothing for it.
Exemptions exist and they are not symmetrical. Applicants from Spanish-speaking countries are generally not asked for the DELE, but the CCSE requirement is much broader. The exact rules are the authorities' to state, not ours — confirm your own case rather than assuming from someone else's.
