Goethe-Zertifikat B1 exam format: modular scoring and passing criteria

The Goethe-Zertifikat B1 is one of the world's most widely recognised German language examinations. Developed jointly by the Goethe-Institut and the ÖSD (Austrian Language Diploma), it certifies independent language proficiency according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).
Modular examination design: The defining feature of Goethe B1 is its modular structure. The exam consists of four separate components that can be registered for, sat, and certified together or completely individually.
The four independent modules
Each module evaluates a specific communicative discipline. All modules are scored out of 100 points, with a minimum passing requirement of 60% in each:

Modular passing rules and certificates
Candidates often ask what happens if three modules pass but one falls short. Under Goethe-Institut rules:
- If you sit all four modules together and pass all four, you receive a composite Goethe-Zertifikat B1 diploma.
- If you pass three modules and fail one (e.g. Schreiben), your three passing modules are permanently secured. You receive individual modular certificates and only need to re-register for and resit the single failed module.
- Once all four module certificates have been earned, they can be consolidated into a full overall certificate.
How to prepare effectively
Unlike general vocabulary practice, mastering Goethe B1 requires strict familiarity with the official task formats — particularly managing the tight 65-minute limit for the 5 reading texts and keeping within the word bounds for the three written tasks. Solving full-length mock exams under accurate time limits is the most proven path to success.
