Preparing for CIPLE on your own

Most people preparing for CIPLE are doing it around a job, in a country whose language they are still learning, without a class. That works — A2 is an early level and the exam is fair. But self-study fails in predictable places, and they are worth naming before you meet them.
What self-study handles well
Vocabulary and grammar are the parts that reward solitary work most reliably. Everyday Portuguese at A2 — routines, family, shopping, directions, past and present tense — is well covered by ordinary study, and progress is easy to feel.
Where it usually breaks down
The format. Candidates lose marks to the shape of the exam as often as to the language. A matching task where five messages meet eight replies is a specific skill, and the first time you meet it should not be on exam day.
The clock. Knowing the answer and knowing it in the time given are different things. The reading and writing component is 1h15 and carries 45% of the certificate; people who have never worked against that clock routinely run out of it on the writing tasks.
Feedback on production. This is the real gap. You can check a reading answer yourself. You cannot mark your own writing, because the errors you can see are the ones you have already stopped making — and you cannot hear your own speaking the way an examiner does.
Covering the gap
The first two are solved by sitting the exam, repeatedly, under its own conditions. WLE recreates each CIPLE component as its own timed paper on the real clock, one question at a time, and every objective question comes back with an explanation of why the correct answer is correct — the part a textbook answer key usually leaves out.
For the third, writing and speaking answers are evaluated by AI: your writing comes back with the errors marked in your own text and a short list of what was wrong and what it should have been. It is not a teacher, and it is honest about that — but it does name faults you cannot name for yourself, which is exactly what solitary study lacks.
Where a person is still better. Nothing here replaces speaking Portuguese with someone who speaks Portuguese. If you can find conversation practice — a tandem partner, a class, a patient neighbour — take it. Mock exams prepare you for the exam; conversation prepares you for the language.
A workable order
- Read what the three components are, so you know what you are aiming at.
- Sit a full mock early — before you feel ready. It tells you which component is weakest, which is the only thing worth planning around.
- Study the weak component, then re-sit under the clock.
- Check how the components are weighted and spend your remaining time where the marks actually are.
